National State Book Chamber

The National State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan was organized by the State Book Chamber of the Kazakh SSR on the basis of a joint resolution of the Central Executive Committee of Kazakhstan and the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh SSR dated July 19, 1937 "on the establishment of the State Book Chamber of the Kazakh SSR". In 1937-1945, the Book Chamber was subordinate to the People's Commissariat of Reading of Kazakhstan, in 1945-1953-to the Department of Cultural and educational institutions under the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, in 1953-1963-to the Ministry of Culture of Kazakhstan, and since 1963-to the State Press Cabinet of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR. The State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan was renamed the National State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan by Resolution No. 270 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated April 6, 1993. Currently, the National State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

It is the only scientific and bibliographic center in Kazakhstan that carries out statistics, collection and storage of printed and printed products, and performs registration in accordance with the requirements of international standards. Publishing scientific and bibliographic indexes, maintaining press statistics, issuing information and bibliographic references to publishers, institutions, individuals on the basis of systematized catalogs is one of the main functions of the Book Chamber. The National State Book Chamber issues barcodes (ISBNs) to publishers and organizations that produce printed products.

The purpose of the book chamber is to create an Archive of the Press of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republican Scientific Center for State Bibliography, Press Statistics, centralized cataloging; implementation of the state program for accounting and scientific processing of all printed works published on the territory of the republic, as well as performing the function of numbering books by international standards (International Standard Book Numbering), assigning bar codes, CBS (library and bibliographic classification).

About 5 million mandatory copies of printed materials are stored in the fund of the Press Archive of the Book Chamber.

Collection in the archive, Registration of copies of the issued editions of all periodicals of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
Ensuring the safety of mandatory copies in the archive of the press of the Republic of Kazakhstan, monitoring the safety of works of periodicals;
Providing bibliographic information: chronicles and references of scientific institutions of the country, libraries, centers engaged in science;
Replenishment and storage of periodicals in the fund of the Press Archive of the National State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
Ensuring the assignment of the international barcode ISBN, ISSN, ISMN to printed products manufactured in the Republic of Kazakhstan;
Implementation of bibliographic processing of the main types of materials, publications published in the Republic of Kazakhstan;
Maintaining statistical records of periodicals (newspapers, magazines, continuing publications, etc.) published in the Republic of Kazakhstan;
Assignment of the UDC index (universal decimal classification) to books and journals published in Kazakhstan;
Maintaining a system of catalogs and card files for all types of publications, materials published in the Republic of Kazakhstan since 1917, including literature published before 1917 in the fund of the Book Chamber;
Collection of materials about the Republic of Kazakhstan published abroad;
Identification, accounting of works published in Kazakhstan, materials about the countries of the near and far abroad, sending cards with a bibliographic description to other libraries, scientific institutions;
Withdrawal of printed materials from state, public places of the country, private persons on request;
Creation of electronic copies of publications stored in the press archive;
Conducting research, sociological research on periodicals of the republic and organizing scientific and practical seminars, conferences, " round tables" ;
Organization of book exhibitions and fairs.
 
The Book Chamber turns 83 years old on the eve.
   Since its foundation, the book chamber has been professionally and professionally performing its main tasks and functions established by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The National State Book Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been the national bibliographic center of the country for almost 83 years.

The Book Chamber honourably fulfills the tasks assigned to it by the National Scientific Bibliographic and Statistical Center.

The main scientific research and analysis of the book chamber is aimed at studying the effectiveness of the current state (national) bibliography of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as the analysis of the scientific and technical level of regulatory documents.

Efforts to accumulate the creation of a special organizational structure for the future are aimed at integrating the implementation of the system of activities and products in the field of national bibliography.
